Setting Targets

Set a target grade for each of your National 5 or Higher exams.

Setting target grades is important because having goals to aim for will:

  1. help you to stay motivated and focused on what you aim to achieve;
  2. help you set study goals and objectives;
  3. assist your self-evaluation of your progress in each course;
  4. highlight the things you need to improve in order to achieve that grade.

How to Set Targets

Realistically assess your strengths and weaknesses when setting targets. You may have a natural aptitude and interest in some subjects but weaker in others, so it’s important to take this into consideration.

For each course consider what you want to achieve. Do you want straight A’s? Who doesn’t, right? But are you setting yourself up to be disappointed? It’s important to be aspirational but your goals should be realistic too.

Consider the grades you got last year. If you achieved a C in a particular subject, then a B this year would let you aim for improvement. If you got a B grade last year then an A this year would be realistic progress. Speak to your teacher – setting goals and target grades is something best done together.

The ACHIEVE Self-evaluation dashboard will display your confidence levels for each unit in a course. This is a good indicator of whether you are on target to achieve your target grades.
